Universal Ballet Competition is excited to present the JBS x UBC Midwest Pre-Professional Ballet Summer Intensive. Led by Artistic Directors Lissette Lucas and David Lucas, it brings together Joffrey Ballet School and Universal Ballet Competition in a collaborative training experience focused on technical excellence, artistic development, mentorship, and opportunity.

The program is designed for dedicated young dancers seeking to deepen their classical foundation, expand their versatility, and grow with confidence in a supportive and inspiring pre-professional environment.

A Ballet audition is required for admission to this intensive. Students may audition in person or digitally. Students must be 10 years of age by June 7, 2027 to audition and be accepted to this program, and can not be over the age of 19.

Students do not need to attend a separate audition for every Summer Intensive. By completing a Ballet audition, dancers are automatically considered for all Summer Intensives within the Ballet audition style for which they meet the age requirements.

Students train in a full-day intensive environment designed to build technique, artistry, versatility, and professional training habits. A typical day begins with classes in the morning, followed by an approximately 30–45 minute lunch break, with short 5–15 minute breaks between classes. Training then continues through the late afternoon or early evening with additional classes, specialty training, and/or rehearsals.

The curriculum may include Ballet Technique, Ballet Variations, Ballet Repertoire, Contemporary, Contemporary Ballet, Partnering and Pre-Pointe/Pointe/Allegro. Certain classes may be offered only to select levels based on age, placement, and experience. Registered students will receive an exact schedule the week before the intensive start date.

Registration is structured by week, giving students flexibility to build an intensive experience that fits their summer schedule. Students may register for any number of available weeks, and selected weeks do not need to be consecutive.

Students participate in an open studio/open observation each Friday, giving families and guests the opportunity to observe the dancers’ training and progress at the end of each week.

Dancers are assigned to training groups based on their audition and age and may be additionally evaluated during the first day of classes. Studio assignments are determined by program scheduling, group placement, and enrollment; requests for a particular studio cannot be accommodated.

For students registered for housing, residence hall assignments are based on factors which may include age, gender, program selection, dates of attendance, and available space. Requests for specific dorm buildings cannot be guaranteed.
